Our Favorite Halloween Books

Books are an excellent way to introduce and celebrate Halloween long before the actual day, because we could all use a little more celebration in our lives! It’s not uncommon for toddlers and preschoolers to develop some skepticism around the scarier aspects of Halloween, so books allow them to safely explore spooky themes. Here are a few of our Halloween favorites—they’re cute, educational, and some include a fun interactive surprise. We can’t wait to grab a few of these books and snuggle up with our little readers!

The Spooky Wheels on the Bus

When you’re tired of singing “The Wheels on the Bus” for the umpteenth time, mix it up with a Halloween-themed rendition! Kids delight in word play, so hearing different words to a familiar tune will definitely bring some smiles. There’s also a numerical element to the verses, so you can easily work on counting skills as well.

 Halloween Day

We all probably have some fond memories of getting to wear our Halloween costumes for a parade and party at school. This book allows you to revisit those feelings, while getting kids excited for their own celebrations with friends at school (or however you decide to safely celebrate this year). Embedded in the story is a lesson for appreciating for various kinds of costumes, even scary ones!

10 Trick-or-Treaters

This book is a fun read, with its rhyming prose and its adorable illustrations. The story begins with 10 kids setting out to trick-or-treat and encourages counting as they are scared away one by one by spooky creatures.

The Spooky Smells of Halloween

Apples, cookies, pumpkins, and…skunks? This interactive scratch-and-sniff book allows kids to use their sense of smell to explore all the fun scents that accompany fall and Halloween.

Too Many Monsters

This counting book is a great way to explore monsters, especially for kids with active imaginations who might be working through a fear of creatures living their closets. The illustrations depict monsters that are bold but friendly, so you can sneak in a discussion on how they may look scary but are ultimately harmless!

A Moonlight Book: Halloween Hide and Seek

Kids will love this unique book, where they can use a built-in flashlight to search for Halloween objects. They’ll have so much fun using the no-batteries-required flashlight, providing entertainment for hours! They didn’t make books like this when we were kids!
