Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Although St. Patrick’s day is a national holiday celebrated in Ireland to honor Saint Patrick, people all over the world recognize and enjoy the holiday as well. Here are a few ways to get festive with your family.

1. Catch a Leprechaun

Tell your children the tale about the St. Patrick’s day leprechaun. According to Irish legend, leprechauns are tiny, mischievous creatures who are famous for their “pot of gold”. Where do these gold coins come from, you ask? These little beings work as shoemakers to collect gold coins for their pots. If you’re able to catch a leprechaun, he’ll have to tell you where his pot of gold is! Now that you know the story, get creative with your littles and build a leprechaun trap. Lure him with anything and everything from glitter to gold coins!

2. Get Your Green On!

Traditionally, the color green is symbolic to the holiday. Dress up the family in green and sip on some delicious green drinks. A few healthy beverages you can whip up are limeade, a green smoothie or even a green apple juice. Feeling like dessert? Make a Shamrock Shake at home using the recipe below:

Ingredients

1c  vanilla ice cream
1c milk of your choice
1.5 tbs of maple syrup or sweetener of your choice
1/4 tsp of spinach juice (to substitute for food coloring)
1/2 tsp mint extract
Whipped cream
1/2c Lucky Charms cereal (for garnish)

Directions

1. Add all ingredients (except the cereal and the whipped cream) to the blender

2. Blend ingredients until smooth

3. Pour into a cup, garnish with whipped cream and Lucky Charms cereal, and enjoy!

3. Plan a St. Patrick’s Day Hunt

Who says scavenger hunts only happen on Easter? Set-up a St. Patrick’s Day themed hunt in your home with delicious treats like chocolate covered gold coins, mini boxes of Lucky Charms cereal, green cake pops, or whatever your heart desires.
